A total of 27 Trans Semarang electric buses were launched as part of the 2026 National Transportation Day commemorations at the Semarang City Hall courtyard in Central Java.

Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti stated in Semarang on Wednesday that the launch is part of a target to modernize 132 fleet units—out of a total of 284—in 2026.

The goal is to create a public transportation service that is modern, inclusive, and environmentally friendly.

In addition to adding cleaner vehicles to the fleet, efforts to reduce emissions are also being pursued through the replacement of older vehicles.

She urged the public to actively report operational buses that still emit thick smoke so that immediate action can be taken regarding fleet replacement.

“Eliminating them all at once might be too extreme. However, we are reducing them gradually—replacing high-emission buses one by one with new ones—until the entire fleet is completely clean,” she said.

The 12-meter “low-deck” electric buses—produced through a collaboration between PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR) and PT Laksana Bus Manufaktur (Laksana)—are designated for Corridor I, covering the Mangkang Terminal–Penggaron Terminal route.

This fleet, connecting the western and eastern areas of Semarang City, will begin phased operations on September 25, 2026, with full operation targeted before the end of the year.

With a capacity of up to 60 passengers, the buses are designed to facilitate access for people with disabilities and residents with limited mobility.

With zero direct exhaust emissions and lower operational noise levels, the introduction of electric buses also offers the public a chance to witness firsthand the use of electric vehicles in public transportation services.

“People used to wonder where to recharge, and there were concerns that battery power would degrade over time. By introducing electric buses for Trans Semarang, the public can see their reliability for themselves,” she said.

She emphasized that the transformation of public transportation must proceed through the adoption of more sustainable technologies to improve the quality of life for residents. “We hope this transformation provides better mobility options for the public while also serving as part of a collective effort to create a healthier and more sustainable urban environment,” he said.

Ardie Bakrie, President Director of VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk, commended the Semarang City Government’s efforts to transform public transportation.

“As a national industry player, VKTR and its partners remain committed to supporting all sustainability initiatives implemented in Semarang City,” he said.

National Transportation Day also served as an opportunity to encourage the entire transportation sector to use the month of September to reinforce a culture of transportation safety—one that is upheld throughout the year.

Following the launch, the Mayor of Semarang and the accompanying delegation personally test-drove the electric bus, taking it for a ride around the Semarang City Hall complex.
