The Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the theme “Electrification of Public Transportation to Support the Use of Clean Energy.”
This event was held as an effort to encourage reduced vehicle emissions while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
“Electrification of public transportation, particularly electric buses, is an important strategy to reduce emissions while increasing transportation operational efficiency,” said Director of Road Traffic, Rudi Irawan, while reading the Director General of Land Transportation’s remarks on Tuesday (September 16, 2025).
According to him, this program aligns with the national target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060, as mandated in various national development planning documents.
Rudi explained that the land transportation sector is one of the largest contributors to emissions in Indonesia, primarily due to the increasing number of motorized vehicles, particularly private vehicles, which contribute to air pollution and fossil fuel consumption.
“Through this activity, I invite all parties, including the central government, regional governments, industry, academia, and the public, to work together to support the acceleration of clean energy use in the land transportation sector,” he said.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inaugurated the launch of the Transjakarta Bus Route 1W from Ancol to Blok M Terminal on Saturday (July 26, 2025).
On the same occasion, Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Speaker Khoirudin revealed that approximately 67 percent of air pollution in Jakarta is caused by motorized vehicles, and Jakarta is listed as the third most polluted city in the world.
According to him, evaluation results show that switching to electric buses can reduce approximately 20,000 tons of carbon in Jakarta.
This achievement earned Jakarta a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate from the Ministry of Environment.
PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) has added 200 new electric Integrated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses to its fleet, which will be operational after its inauguration today at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (December 10, 2024). “As an effort to reduce pollution, we initiated the transition of TransJakarta buses from fuel-powered to electric buses. We currently have 260 electric buses, and we plan to add 200 more this year. The target is to have 10,000 electric buses by 2030,” said Khoirudin.
