To Reduce Air Pollution, Pramono is Ready to Replace Diesel Garbage Trucks with EV Trucks

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated his readiness to begin replacing his fleet of diesel-powered garbage trucks with electric ones in 2026. The procurement of electric garbage trucks is part of an effort to reduce air pollution in the capital.

“If possible, the garbage trucks will be electric, but compact and can handle the leachate without going anywhere. I will request that we start procuring electric garbage trucks in 2026,” Pramono said at a Townhall Meeting at M Bloc, South Jakarta, Tuesday (February 10, 2026).

Pramono stated that this policy is crucial to ensure that efforts to control air pollution in Jakarta are aligned. He believes it makes no sense for the government to strive to reduce emissions while still relying on garbage trucks, which are themselves a source of pollution.

“If we address the pollution problem with garbage trucks, we’re only adding to the pollution. It’s impossible. And those vehicles must be replaced,” he said.

Currently, Jakarta operates thousands of garbage trucks, almost all of which run on diesel fuel. Meanwhile, the number of electric garbage trucks in Jakarta is still very limited, at less than 10.

Pramono explained that one of the main obstacles to the use of electric garbage trucks is the nature of Jakarta’s waste collection fleet, which is predominantly compactor trucks with very heavy loads.

“The problem is that almost all garbage trucks are compact. They are very heavy and require a lot of energy. So if electricity is possible, I will order them to start using electricity,” Pramono said.

Leachate Issues

He also touched on the issue of leachate, which often drips from garbage trucks, causing concern among residents due to the foul odor it leaves behind. This situation has recently occurred, particularly at the Rorotan Plant waste processing facility in North Jakarta.

“The dripping leachate is the main source of concern and is currently one of the concerns in Rorotan,” he said.

Pramono said that the Jakarta Provincial Government has adjusted its waste transportation policy to Rorotan by using new trucks manufactured in 2024–2025. “Jakarta is currently preparing for the Rorotan incident, or rather, we’re changing the policies that need to be implemented. We’re now using new trucks to transport waste in Rorotan,” Pramono said.
